Much of East Van (Grandview-Woodlands especially) was Italian in those days and Notre Dame is a Catholic school, which explains why about 1/3 of team was Italo-Canadese. Many of those families migrated east to North Burnaby in the 70's and 80s. Although Notre Dame has an Italian presence today, there are many Philippine students.

Funny how the program lists him as "Louis Passaglia" when his name is actually Luigi (shortened to Lui).

Yeah, now that I think about it, the Commercial Drive area was historically somewhat of an ethnic enclave, sort of like the Greektown area of Kits, less so nowadays in both cases.

I was scratching my head on the Louis thing, too. Not only that but they actually dropped one of the S's from his surname as well!
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Lui began his football training in 1967 as a 13-year-old Grade 8 QB in Vancouver College's midget house league, where he was listed as Luigi Passaglia but known as Lui. He was good then, although I remember him more as a running threat than a passing threat at that level. I was sorry that he transferred to VC's crosstown rival but Notre Dame had the stronger program in those days and didn't let many players slip away, especially if they had East Van or Burnaby roots.

If you look closely, it's "Pasaglia" with one "s" too.

Yeah, Louis Pasaglia wearing #30 as a Freshman QB. He was only 14 years old at the time and as a young teenager, he stood 5-8 and 142 pounds.
He certainly grew bigger and taller when he ended up standing 5-11 and 180 pounds as a young man.

Some great pictures of him throughout the years:

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Lui!
