is ....ANTHONY CALVILLO

2014 ORANGE HELMET AWARDS DINNER
A Celebration of Amateur Football
Friday, April 4th 2014
Reception: 5:30pm Dinner: 6:30pm
The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver BC

Antony Calvillo's story is about perseverance. He not only overcame the odds stacked against him in childhood to become a CFL success, but also triumphed over personal tragedy. Originally making his CFL debut with the American expansion team the Las Vegas Posse, Calvillo continued down a path to CFL greatness. After signing as a free agent with the Montreal Alouettes in 1998, Calvillo would become the franchise's all-time leader in every category. In 2002, he led the Alouettes to their first Grey Cup victory in 25 years and was named the game's MVP. He would follow up that year with his first of three CFL most outstanding player awards (2003, 2008, 2009). By the end of Anthony's career, he was named an East All-Star ten times, a CFL All-Star five times and would win the Alouettes two more Grey Cups in 2009 and 2010. As evidence to his legacy, in 2011 Calvillo became the pro football all-time leader in passing yards. He has twice played through cancer; first with his wife Alexia's diagnosis in 2007, then his own diagnosed in the summer of 2010. Anthony is the epitome of a true leader, a player who set his sights on succeeding through football both on and off the field and did just that.

BC LIONS' BE MORE THAN A BYSTANDER DOCUMENTARY NOW AVAILABLE TO BC VIEWERS

We're also pleased to announce that a documentary feature on the groundbreaking Be More Than a Bystander initiative is now available to both TELUS and Shaw digital cable subscribers through their respective on-demand services.

The short but powerful documentary looks at the issue of violence against women through the lens of the Be More Than a Bystander program – an initiative which launched in 2011 in partnership with The Ending Violence Association of BC (EVA BC).

Viewers see current and former BC Lions players sharing their personal stories about how they engage with the issue of violence against women, both through intimate personal reflections as well as in their interactions with students in school presentations and events throughout the province. The documentary also includes the analysis of anti-violence experts and community advocates who offer a broad framework for understanding why violence against women is a men’s issue.

For TELUS subscribers: go to TV On Demand, then to Optik Local, Featured. For Shaw subscribers: go to Shaw VOD, select Subscriptions, Shaw TV and then Shows.

The Be More Than a Bystander program is made possible with the generous support of Founding Partners: The Government of Canada, BC Ministry of Children and Family Development and Encana Corporation; Supporting Partner: BC Federation of Labour and Municipal Partners: City of Vancouver and City of Surrey.

AC jumped at the chance to take this gig when it was offered to him — once he realised it meant that for a change he would get to leave BC without a loss.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

This isn't quite right; I had to take the ff menu path:

Shaw VOD > TV on Demand (NOT Subscriptions) > Shaw TV > Shows

and then it's right at the top of the list. Runtime is listed at 20mins, can be viewed at no added cost to your Shaw subscription.

I made this suggestion before in past Orange Helmet Award dinners and I'll make this suggestion.

Should Lionbackers.com reserve a table for 10 as a corporate group?

http://cfl.uploads.mrx.ca/bc/downloads/ ... 014439.pdf

1 x 2,500.00 per table of 10 = $2,500.00
5% GST = $125.00
Total Due: $2625.00

Each person: $262.50

Did any Lionbackers make it out? Wonder what AC had to say? If you got to go, hope you had a blast......
