Anyone else notice a pattern?
I like the sweat shirt look. I like Belichick's look. LOL

In fact, somewhere on this site, I seem to recall posting pictures side by side of Belichick and Benny, in their hoodies.

Stylewise, just stylewise, hard to top the football coach look of Bill Walsh, IMO.

It won't be me calling a casually dressed football coach unprofessional for not wearing a hat, jacket and tie in the style of Tom Landry.

It is not the clothes that make the man, nor the football coach. So it seems to me.

The new CFL coaches noted in this thread have a clear tone in their teams it seems. It's clear they are focused, their teams are fully prepared and their focus is their oversight role on the entire team and game. These HC's are not worried about guys standing over a player in preseason for what seemed like a mere split second . If that was Benny was behind you at the red light he'd have been honking the moment it went to green.

I think Chamblin is starting to lose the focus in his team (or maybe it is just the loss of players like Sheets ) but it seems to me that he's been touting how great they are even with these guys gone.

“We can find 100 guys like you,” Benevides said to no one in particular during a kickoff return drill"
Mike Benevedes at B.C. Lions practice on Wednesday, Lowell Ullrich, Vancouver Province

I wonder if that nugget is in Benevedes coaching manual that is not for sale. Sure hope Benevedes coaching manual is for sale one day. There are a lot of future Head Coaches who could really use strategies like the one above.

It would be nice to know the context of that statement. If the guys are dogging it and not responding to coaches.....I could see ANY HC in the CFL uttering those words.

IMHO, MB's actions on the sidelines during games warrant criticism.......but some of the other complaints registered on this board from his attire, to chest bumping, to out of context comments are just petty in the grand scheme of things.

I would like to make what I think might be an unpopular suggestion here.... Let me begin with the statement that Bene's sideline demeanour is not at all how I would approach things, but I am also more than willing to suggest that everyone has a different style and, if the lions were 3-0 at this point, we might not even have this particular thread...

that said, I think that, when evaluating HC's we should look at multiple factors - how the players relate to them, their areas of expertise, the on-field performance, etc. Looking around the league, Bene is in the minority as he is a Defensive guy - most HCs are offensive minds. If you want to further break it down, Bene is really a special teams guy (and a good one) who has enjoyed a rather meteoric rise throughout the ranks. As a result, if you look at the areas of the team that Bene should be expected to know and, in some cases, mentor, one would have to look at special teams, where the lions sit statistically at the top of the league and defence, which has kept a subpar offence in the game all season and has been one of the best in the league for years. Our biggest issue seems to be offence, which is not Bene's area of expertise - it would seem to me that this is where an HC would rely on a good co-ordinator. Khari (who I think will be good in his role for years to come) is only really a rookie coordinator at this point and, without significant mentoring, is trying to feel his way along. He will get better, and the Lions O will get better and that will reflect on Bene down the road, but, in the interim, we will all suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

In Bene's defence, he has improved areas of this team and has some areas playing at a high level. His players appear to play for him and respect his systems. He is still making some bonehead game calls, but so have all great coaches, Wally included and he is still learning. He approaches the game like a special teams guy - with emotion and intensity that is occasionally misappropriated, but us fans are guilty of exactly the same thing - hell I have thrown popcorn at the mere sight of Andre Proulx and seemingly lose my mind at blown calls from my seat in 244.

I guess my point (if I have even made it) is that all is not doom and gloom for us with Bene at the helm. Count me as at least one fan willing to give him the benefit of the doubt... well, at least until game day when I will be screaming away from my seat like a moron.

Ahh if that were only true for a LT, although we are getting close in numbers, just not quality.

LOL ... Yes. On the way to 100 left tackles. Nope. Not good enough. Toss that one over the shoulder. Next. There must be a purrfect one in here somewhere. Right out of the box. Comes with skills intact from college and NFL experience. A beast on run blocking. A mobile tank on pass blocking. Next.

You only left out the tire pumping cliche quote from Benevides during the LT's initial week of practice for the media.

I can see where some posters might view some of the comments on this Board regarding Benevedes might be considered unimportant in the bigger scheme of things. After all, in the end its wins and losses and improvement of a team that count in the end.

However, Benevedes is not a rookie Head Coach anymore. I agree that every HC has his own style and needs to be true to who is is. But a HC is also under a microscope, in terms of his comments, his demeanor, his decision making, his approach, etc. A team quite often takes on some of the personality of a HC, both good and bad aspects.

But sometimes a number of what might be considered 'smaller things' can add up to a bigger concern. Sometimes they can be a canary in a coal mine and sometimes they may not be. Its always difficult to know for sure. Our Lions may go on to win a Grey Cup this season and the recent comments made on this Board will look to have been overblown and silly in the bigger picture. They also may be small signs that a HC, who is making unwise comments as the Kevin Glenn trade being the 'trade of the century' or unwise incessant yapping on the sidelines, may not have deep wisdom and maturity for long term success as a HC. Only time will tell.

I'm someone who believes the devil is often in the details and right now I'm not comfortable with a lot of details with regard to Benevedes. Does that mean I want him fired. No! I just believe he would be more successful and our Lions would be more successful if he toned down the act on the sidelines, thought a little more before he speaks sometimes, and created a sense of greater maturity and poise and perspective.

An example is his recent coment at practice that he could replace anyone on the special teams - that there are 100 players who could take their place. Do you not think that they know that. There are much better ways to improve player performance on a unit. How would Benevedes like it if he was told that there are 100 Head Coaches who are NFL assistants or U.S. College coaches who have great resumes, sound coaching backgrounds, more experience coaching, run very successful programs, have records of innovation, that could replace him. Would that make him coach any better?

I learned a lot of my football philosophy from Don Matthews. He believed in teaching. He believed in being positive with players and never criticizing but instead always showing a player how he could play better rather than just pointing out a mistake or threatening. Sometimes a player needs a kick in the pants but barking out in front of an entire special teams unit that there are 100 players who could replace them is not coaching. If some players are not getting it right or not putting in the effort you talk to them individually. He could also make the unit stay longer at practice until their effort or skills improve. He could bring the entire unit together and tell them forcefully he is not happy with their effort or whatever.

I think most of the criticisms of Benevedes so far have been fair. We want to respect and admire our HC of the Lions. Within different coaching styles I think outside of wins and losses, what we look for most from a Head Coach is professionalism, perspective, wisdom, and leadership. When we see signs that those may be lacking, even in smaller ways, its disappointing or concerning.

I don't think anyone is gunning for Benevedes. We know he will be our HC for the future. I think we just want him to elevate himself as a HC.

BC 41 - Ottawa 3

Great game for our coaches. A reprieve. The heat was getting so bad that the old Injuries Excuse had to be hauled out.

Mark W had his defence very, very well prepared once again. Air tight. With Solo on patrol against the run from sideline to sideline. One thing seems clear: Mark W will be a Head Coach at some time in this league. Not bombastic. Not seeking the limelight, nor the camera. But he has his guys thoroughly prepared, both with Xs and Os, and with the mental-emotional side of things. We even saw some well timed blitzes on occasion. I just hope we do not lose him to another franchise. Defensive specialist coaches can make great Head Coaches. Don Matthews. Chris Jones might be one on the make. They certainly understand how offences can attack a D. It is their attitude that carries over.

Khari Jones. A reprieve. Where did this come from? Nice variety. Good game planning. Great calls. Great confidence shown by the Kiddie Korps of receivers. And I expect much of the huge, huge performance had to do with the much maligned, underappreciated Kevin Glenn. KG is showing us how he has thrown for Hall of Fame numbers in his outstanding career. All he needs for that honour is a Grey Cup win, and he might not even need that.

Dan Dorazio. Once again we see what our guys are capable of when the job is clear and simple. Maul the guy opposite you. Hang and fuhgeddabout the focus on itty bitty techniques. These guys are earth movers. Let them pile drive. Wear down the defence. Keep the assignments as simple as possible. Moving the pocket helps in many ways for pass protection.

Benny had reason to be excited. His team was hitting on all cylinders. So he showed some of that posturing on the sideline a little bit. And his post game words drifted around a bit. At some point, working for his patient, benevolent mentor, Wally Buono, Benny has to win some playoff games. Everybody knows this. The way we played last night, all is possible. I have to ask, though, where has this been all year? Much depends on this year. If we get in ... If we make some noise ...

We are alive. We have chances. Are we out of the woods? Far from it. Could we backslide? Sure. Could we experiment with counter productive stuff? Sure. But I expect our D will hold us in there. Is it any coincidence that Solo, Biggie and Josh J are playing so well, with Johnny Holland as their position coach? I think not. Is it any coincidence that the DBs are doing the same under Mark W? I think not. Same with the D Line and Carl Hairston, and all his wisdom and experience. Westerman and Menard are showing what National DL guys can bring.

Nice to see our O break out of its funk.

Fun game to watch.

Yes we had quite a bunch of those 'nationals' who were very physical. That is one thing I didn't realize was happening AS MUCH in the stadium, as when I watched the replay on TV later. Fabien in particular seemed on that line of controlled nastiness that great O-lines have.....

It really was a fun game to watch (yes even the second time). Coach made it clear the boys had better have the popcorn popped and be ready to watch the film this morning at 10 AM but as soon as that was done, its BYE time as far as he's concerned. I was really concerned going into this game but it was a solid WIN before getting a weeks rest. Lots of leaders will be available TO PLAY once the time to play comes around again.....
