Stamps losing o-line coach Gibson to the Ottawa Redblacks

Calgary’s linebackers coach Don Yanowsky could also be moving east — he’s mulling over an offer to become Redblacks special teams co-ordinator

By Vicki Hall, Calgary Herald December 8, 2013

Calgary Stampeders offensive line coach Mike Gibson is headed to Ottawa to be the new offensive co-ordinator of the Ottawa Redblacks, sources tell the Calgary Herald.

Rick Campbell’s raid of the Calgary Stampeders coaching staff took all of 48 hours to materialize from the time of the news conference to formalize his appointment as head coach of the expansion Ottawa Redblacks.

Sources say Mike Gibson, Calgary’s offensive line coach, has agreed to terms to serve as Campbell’s offensive co-ordinator. A formal announcement is expected to come as early as Monday.

Don’t expect Campbell, Calgary’s defensive co-ordinator for the last two seasons, to stop there.

Under Gibson’s watch last season, the Stamps — with an ever-changing cast of characters up front due to injury — surrendered the fewest sacks in the league (36). Anchored by raw rookie Brett Jones at centre, the Stamps led the league in net rushing yards (2,547) and average rushing yards per game (141.5)

With 10 years of CFL coaching experience in Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, Hamilton and Calgary, Gibson is a proven commodity. He won a Grey Cup in 2007 as the assistant head coach of the Roughriders and served as the offensive co-ordinator of the Blue Bombers (2002-03) and Tiger-Cats (2009-10).

Gibson moved to Calgary in 2011 to coach the running backs before switching to the offensive line in 2012.

In conversation with the Ottawa Citizen, Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins didn’t deny that the team had talked to Gibson, but said nothing had been completed.

“It’s in the works,” Desjardins told Gord Holder. “But it’s not final by any stretch.”

Also in the mix for a move to Ottawa: Don Yanowsky. Sources say the Calgary linebackers coach is mulling over an offer to become special-teams co-ordinator for the Redblacks.

“We are working on things right now,” Campbell told the Citizen. “We are kind of in the middle of stuff. There’s nothing to announce or talk about (right now).”

Yanowsky — simply known as Yano down at McMahon Stadium — joined the Stampeders in 2012 after a 20-year coaching career in the United States that included a stint as the tight ends coach and special-teams co-ordinator at the University of Memphis.

Yanowsky’s departure could be finalized as early as Monday with the Redblacks gearing up for the Dec. 16 expansion draft in which several big-name Stampeders are obvious targets.

With 23-year-old Bo Levi Mitchell almost certainly protected, veterans Kevin Glenn and Drew Tate are expected to remain exposed to claim by Ottawa (the Redblacks can only choose one quarterback from a single team).

Should Ottawa select Glenn or Tate, the Stamps won’t lose punter Rob Maver to the Redblacks (kicker Rene Paredes is a lock for protection given his status as one of the best, if not the best, of his generation).

I don't think much of Drew Tate's attitude. Not surprised if the Stampeders keep Mitchell instead.

Gibson has a very impressive resume ... IMO.

Mike Gibson

Offensive Line Coach

CFL: 10th season
Stamps: 3rd season

Gibson is entering his 10th season in the CFL and third with the Stampeders. This season will be Gibson’s second as the team’s offensive line coach.

A rash of injuries in 2012 didn’t stop the offensive line from making Calgary one of the top rushing teams in the league. The Stamps led the CFL in rushing touchdowns (20) and second in rushing yards (2,088). The line helped the Stamps offence lead the CFL in total touchdowns while ranking second in points, first downs and pass-completion percentage and third in fewest sacks allowed. The unit also paved the way for running back Jon Cornish’s CFL rushing title. Guard Dimitri Tsoumpas was named a CFL all-star.

Gibson first joined the Stamps in 2011 as the running backs coach, helping the club finish second in rushing yards. The club was second in rushing yards (2,244) and second in yards per carry (6.2).

Prior to joining the Stampeders, Gibson spent two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as offensive coordinator. In 2009, Gibson also coached the offensive line and, in 2010, he worked with the team’s running backs. The Tiger-Cats offence made steady progress under Gibson and, in 2010, Kevin Glenn set a franchise record for touchdown passes and became only the second Hamilton pivot to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season.

Before his two-season stint in Hamilton, Gibson spent two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as assistant head coach and offensive line coach and a total of three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers — coaching the offensive line all three seasons, as well as serving as offensive coordinator during his final two seasons with the Blue Bombers.

Gibson’s first taste of the CFL came in 1995 when he was a guest coach with the B.C. Lions. He was hired as Winnipeg’s offensive line coach in 2001, a season in which the Bombers went 14-4 and played in the Grey Cup game. He earned a Grey Cup ring as part of Saskatchewan’s coaching staff in 2007.

After completing his playing career at Western Maryland College in 1978, Gibson began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant. In 1980, he was hired as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Cornell University. Gibson joined Boston University in 1982 and served as running backs coach for four seasons and quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator during his final two seasons in Boston.

Following one season at Rice University as assistant athletic director and recruiting coordinator, he went to Temple and was Temple University’s offensive line coach for four years. He then joined Colgate University, where he served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for two years.

He was offensive tackles/tight ends and special teams coach at Rutgers University for four seasons before joining the Blue Bombers for the 2001 season. After three seasons at the University of Louisiana as offensive line coach, he returned to the Bombers in 2005.

Open season: GMs continue search for new coaches

CFL.ca Staff

TORONTO -- The 2013-14 off-season is going to be a hectic one.

With the addition of the 2013 Ottawa REDBLACKS Expansion Draft, general managers across the league will be hard at work over the next couple of weeks, in hopes of securing their best options for what’s going to be a historic day in the CFL.

For some teams, however, the Expansion Draft isn’t the only pressing item on their to-do lists.

As is the case in virtually every other off-season, coaching vacancies need to be filled both on a head and assistant level.

Here’s a look at each team’s sideline situation, along with which available coach might be a good fit.

BC Lions: After it was announced that Jacques Chapdelaine and Rich Stubler would not be returning to the team in 2014, the Lions are in the market for a new offensive and defensive coordinator.

And while nothing appears to be set in stone at the moment, News 1130 Sports in Vancouver has reported that the Lions have asked for permission to speak with Roughriders offensive coordinator George Cortez about the vacant OC spot. Meanwhile, Lowell Ullrich of the of the Vancouver Province believes it's possible that Paul LaPolice is a viable option as well, should he elect to leave his position at TSN.

The station has also said that BC head coach Mike Benevides has “5-6 names on his list.”

As for Stubler's old position, Ullrich states that defensive backs coach Mark Washington is expected to be named as his replacement.

Edmonton Eskimos: General Manager Ed Hervey was quick to replace Kavis Reed, needing just 24 days to hire Chris Jones as the team’s new head coach. Jones, known for his defensive prowess, has yet to comment on what his intentions are to fill up the remainder of his staff.

However, Gerry Moddejonge of the Edmonton Sun believes there are five names high up on Jones’ wish list. Among them are Craig Dickenson, Doug Berry, Stephen McAdoo, Jason Tucker and Jason Maas.

Montreal Alouettes: In Montreal, The Gazette’s Herb Zurkowsky believes that it’s still possible that Jim Popp returns as head coach. Zurkowsky has also stated that the Alouettes have approached Paul LaPolice to fill their offensive coordinator position.

Ottawa REDBLACKS: After being named head coach last week, it appears that Rick Campbell isn't wasting any time filling out his staff. According to Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald, the REDBLACKS are expected to name Stampeders offensive line coach Mike Gibson as their offensive coordinator.
So it looks like the Lions will announce Mark Washington as new DC.

And if Paul LaPolice does not choose to leave TSN? Plan B? Plan C? Chapdelaine Remorse? LOL Nah ... I was disappointed when Wally welcomed him back from Edmonton, especially as I liked what Kruck and Dorazio were doing. Where will Chapdelaine land? Why would Cortez leave Regina for a sideways move?

If another coach does leave Calgary - no doubt he's trying to up his stock with the Stamps as we talk of this - it will be interesting there for sure.

But one thing that the GM/HC and Dickenson gives them is pretty solid leadership with Hufnagel seemingly able to bring in guys who can fill spots and perform effectively there. He has lost most of his assistants to promotions IIRC not a turn style like with Kavis in Edmonton.

The Calgary staff might be partial to a Calgary QB or some other player there they know well.

Joe, as you have always said, a huge part of any OLine Coache's responsibilities is to DEVELOP young talent to handle turnover internally...the Lions simply have NOT done this with Dorazio...and until Kelly Bates took over the draft selections, we couldn't seem to draft an OLineman who could stick or produce...Gibson has done all of that, and then some...

Some excerpts from the article by Lowell Ullrich of the Province ...
Lions lose out to Roughriders, TV in search for offensive co-ordinator

Cortez stays with Saskatchewan, LaPolice keeps cushy TSN gig, so B.C. still has an offensive co-ordinator opening:

By Lowell Ullrich, The Province December 11, 2013 7:00 PM
But the Lions are switching plans quickly for an offensive solution and could instead end up being attracted to a former quarterback. Former Lions and Winnipeg pivot Khari Jones, who worked the last two seasons as quarterbacks coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, has already talked to coach Mike Benevides.

Also expressing an interest: Toronto Argonauts quarterbacks coach Jason Maas, who has a past with his Lions counterpart, Jarious Jackson.

Cortez, who told reporters during Grey Cup week that he was content with the Riders, turned down the chance to interview for the Lions job. LaPolice was scheduled to be in Vancouver this week to discuss what Benevides previously described as a career choice for the former Winnipeg head coach, who worked last season as a TSN analyst. Television won, at least for now.
Jones started his coaching career not long after Washington left the game as a defensive back with the Lions. Jones helped Kevin Glenn become a 5,000-yard passer as a quarterbacks coach in 2010 with Hamilton, then worked a season as offensive co-ordinator a year later under Marcel Bellefeuille before following Corey Chamblin to Saskatchewan.

Jones, who has also interviewed for the same position in Winnipeg, would have Jackson, Dan Dorazio and Kelly Bates as co-workers, but the Lions are being forced to maintain the nucleus of their offensive staff by denying the Bombers permission to speak to some of their coaches.
That is a bit unusual. Teams usually allow their assistant coaches to interview for job promotions.

I wouldn't want to be in Benny's position. For example, I am not sure I would choose Khari Jones over Jarious Jackson, or Kelly Bates, or even Dan Dorazio. If Dorazio doesn't want the OC job, too bad. He is the most qualified of our present offensive coaches. It is not an ideal situation for us, it seems to me. We cut ties with two very experienced guys, and easy fits are not falling into place.

LaPo or Cortez? Fine. Easy for most fans to accept those guys if that had come to pass. Hard for a young coach to feel he deserves an internal promotion over those very experienced guys. But Khari Jones or Jason Maas? They do not have resumes bulging with achievements as coaches. And yet I think it would now be dicey for Benny to go with one of our young guys, Jackson or Bates, or the very long serving Dan Dorazio. Not sure they would be all that marketable at this time in their careers for 2014.

Now that we hear of LaPolice staying with TSN, methinks Dunigan is unavailable also, whether or not Benny considered him, whether or not Dunigan would even countenance such a move. TSN seems ready to ante up the money to keep its guys.

Re Xs and Os guys as Head Coaches. Fans can see it both ways of course. Wally is an example of a HC that delegated much of that to his OC and DC. Benny might see himself in that same role.

And yet, I have to say, I would be more comfortable with a HC that can lead, teach, mentor and even do the offensive Xs and Os himself, if it came to that. As noted a few times, Hufnagel, Austin and Milanovich are examples of guys who can bring along a young OC. It seems evident that Benny cannot do that with an OC. And although he does not have a huge resume himself as a DC, he should be comfortable working with and guiding Mark Washington.

So my preference at this time in the CFL, would be to follow the model of the Stampeders, the Argonauts and the TiCats, with an ex pro QB as Head Coach. Demonstrated offensive Xs and Os mastery as the scheme leader for the team. Just IMO ... I know others see it differently.

And of course, as a Lions' fan, I hope Benny finds the right guy for OC, and our coaching staff gets us in position to compete for the Cup in 2014.

LaPo must have a nice gig at TSN if he makes enough money that he can turn down fulltime coaching job. He spends two minutes on air at halftime of each game breaking down one play. That's a lot less stressful than the countless hours an offensive coordinator must put in year-round.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats[edit]

In 2009, Khari Jones began his coaching career as the quarterbacks coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats under head coach Marcel Bellefeuille. In 2011, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and helped the team to an appearance in the East Final.

Saskatchewan Roughriders[edit]

On January 3, 2012, he was announced as part of the coaching staff for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as their quarterbacks coach.[2] In 2013, he helped his team win the 101st Grey Cup.
Toronto Argonauts[edit]

On December 20, 2011, Jason Maas was named the receivers coach for the Toronto Argonauts.[4] On February 24, 2012, it was announced that Maas would shift duties to become the quarterbacks coach.[5]
Jones and Maas as candidates? Yikes ... Their resumes are not exactly screaming; Hire me for OC. At least not yet.

I am pretty sure it would not sell with many fans, but I would have to consider going with Dorazio as OC and JJ as play caller. I would consider it. The Lions will have already evaluated if they feel JJ is ready for that. Bates and JJ? And the Lions will know if they feel Kelly Bates is ready for an OC job. All of these guys, Dorazio, Jackson and Bates might be able to do the job well, but might not be all that marketable at this time in their careers with the fans, going into a key year. Musings only ...

Winnipeg scooped up a couple of guys ... Danny McManus. Marcel Bellefeuille.
Coaching career[edit]

McManus began working as a guest coach with the Tiger-Cats during 2008 CFL season training camp and signed on as a coaching consultant in July to assist offensive co-ordinator Marcel Bellefeuille and work with the quarterbacks.[4] Danny was also formerly the Head U.S. scout for the Ti-Cats.

Front Office Career[edit]

On December 2, 2013, it was announced by TSN that Danny McManus has been hired as the Assistant General Manager and Director of U.S. Scouting for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was hired by his former Ti-Cat's teammate, Kyle Walters, who is now serving as Winnipeg Blue Bomber's General Manager. - Wikipedia
Coaching career[edit]

University of Ottawa[edit]

Bellefeuille was hired by the Ottawa Gee-Gees as their assistant head-coach in 1995.[2] He spent the next three seasons at the same position before being promoted to head coach in 1998.[2] In 1999, he was named OQIFC Coach of the Year and then, in 2000, he led the Gee-Gees to a Vanier Cup victory.[2]

Saskatchewan Roughriders[edit]

After the win in the Vanier Cup, Bellefeuille was hired by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as an assistant.[2] In 2003, he was named the offensive coordinator.[2] In three seasons he helped the Roughriders running backs total 7,000 rushing yards.[2]

Montreal Alouettes[edit]

After leaving Saskatchewan, Bellefeuille joined the Montreal Alouettes in 2006 as their running backs and wide receivers coach.[2] In 2007 he was promoted to Offensive Coordinator and running backs coach. In his 1st season in Montreal, he helped Robert Edwards lead the CFL in touchdowns with 17.[2] Bellefeuille also helped the Alouettes be the only team with two 1,000 yard receivers in Kerry Watkins and Ben Cahoon.[2]

Hamilton Tiger-Cats[edit]

In 2008, Bellefeuille was hired by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to be their offensive coordinator and Quarterbacks coach.[2] In September 2008, following Charlie Taaffe's firing, he was named the interim head coach.[3] On October 27, he was officially named Taaffe's replacement.[4] His record as the Ti-Cats interim coach was 1-7-0. On January 15, 2009, Bellefeuille completed his staff shake-up by hiring Greg Marshall as his defensive coordinator and Mike Gibson as his offensive coordinator.[5] Before the Tiger-Cats final 2009 preseason game against the Toronto Argonauts, Bellefeuille said that, "The only thing we know for certain as a coaching staff and as an organization is that Nick Setta will be our kicker."[6] In 3 full seasons as the head coach of the Ti-Cats, Marcel Bellefeuille transitioned the team into a mediocre football club. From 2003 to 2007 the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had a record of 22-60-1. Under Bellefeuille (from 2008 to 2011) they were 26-28, making the playoffs every season and going to the East Final in 2011. Unfortunately, the fan-base and ownership became weary of the mediocrity of the team under Bellefeuille and relived of him of his duties following the 2011 Season.

Omaha Nighthawks[edit]

Bellefeuille's position with the Tiger-Cats ended following the 2011 season. Prior to the 2012 UFL season, Bellefeuille was announced as Offensive Coordinator and wide receviers coach for the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks. Like Bellefeuille, Omaha head coach Bart Andrus is also a former CFL head coach, having coached the Toronto Argonauts in 2009.[7]

Winnipeg Blue Bombers[edit]

On August 12, 2013, Bellefeuille signed on with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL as a member of the team's offensive coaching staff. Six days later, he was promoted to offensive coordinator following the dismissal of Gary Crowton.[8] - Wikipedia
Not a glowing won/loss record for Marcel B, but he has a lot of experience.

Mike Gibson, reputedly going to the RedBlacks. Not a big name, but a big resume.

Were we "tilting at windmills" with LaPo and Cortez?

Benny certainly wears his emotions on his sleeve as a game day coach. Might we see some anguish there this year, as we go with a new OC and a new DC?

Could it be that LaPo still has some money coming via his severance from the BB as long as he doesn't take another coaching position (he was given a contract extension by the BB in March, 2012)--or do you think that would have run out by now?

LaPo's contract with Winnipeg run through 2014 and he is reportedly collecting $230K per year. So no surprise he would turn down a coordinator job this time around. Another year on TV won't diminish his stock as a coach, so good on him for taking the Bombers money and leaving more time for himself and his family.

Thanks for clarifying, BCL. It's hard to imagine a more idiotic piece of management/finance than giving a guy a 2-year contract extension in early 2012 (so that he's tied to the team moneywise for three seasons) and firing him 5 months later. I wonder how long they'll have to keep paying Joe Mack (and maybe Tim Burke), along with their new GM and HC! Does any of this count against the salary cap? (I'd guess not.)
