Harris and Messam to Return Kicks - Mike Beamish

Excerpts from the article by Mike Beamish ...

Yonus Davis -- Punt returns.

Andrew Harris and Jerome Messam -- Kick returns.

I like this. I like it a lot. Just to see these guys get their chance. Wally works in mysterious ways, at times. Mysterious as in strange, stubborn and incomprehensible. And then there are times that get a fan's interest going again.

Yonus Davis, a 5-7 speedster from San Jose State, was promoted to the active from the practice roster Monday. Davis is likely to handle the main punt-return duties Friday against the Edmonton Eskimos with Andrew Harris and Jerome Messam designated as the kick returners.

Harris, the Canadian junior player of the year last season, is a solid 5-11, 200-pounder. Messam is a very large drink at 6-3, 245 pounds. Together, Harris and the Toronto-born Messam represent a unique departure from standard CFL practice -- an all-Canadian kick return team.

Small, medium and large. Errr ... make that extra large.

"We're going to try and make it happen," Harris said. "Jerome's more of a downhill runner. I'm more of a scatback. But he's got the ability to juke and make guys miss, too. When we've been back there together, we've had some good returns. Hopefully, we can take one to the house."

I like the sound of that. Take it to the house. Oh yeah. That would be sweet.

"I've been asking to do kickoff returns for a while, but I finally got the chance last game," Messam said. "To be honest, I wasn't very judgmental on Robert [Jordan]. I had my own opinions, but I kept them to myself. I just kept telling him, 'Wally, I can do it. I'm here if you need me. Have you thought about putting me on kick return?' He said, 'It's a long season, just wait your time. We'll see.' I guess they had given Rob enough time."

Good to be eager. Although I don't expect Buono is too keen on being lobbied by players.

Davis, 26, could be a man after Buono's heart, if he's a throwback, no-damned-nonsense-about-nuance returner who turns the ball upfield when he sees an opening. The failure to do so was Jordan's undoing.

"It's always my business to go up the field," Davis says. "Once you go side to side, you've already given the defender another step on you. I just love playing with the big boys. I'm a tough guy. Put me in the trenches and let me get dirty."

Get up the field. Yes. Ian Smart was ST player of the year for getting the ball upfield.

STs should be interesting against the Schmoes.

2 desperate teams, far from hitting on all cylinders.

It worked for the receivers getting Chappy back after he was canned in Edmonton.
