The Lions brought in a number of import receivers for Training Camp. Although they have shown athleticism and talent, it has not looked like the next Mervyn Fernandez or Geroy Simon is in the group. Not a lot of size, and no apparently game-breaking speed.

For myself, having seen wide receiver as one of the key needs for this season, I have felt some disappointment in the Lions perhaps not filling this team need.

Wally Buono and Roy Shivers have been complimentary about Clarence Coleman. He is not big. His speed is adequate, but not amongst the real burners.

This Clarence Coleman may be one of those players that flies under the radar, not flashy, but very productive. Slippery speed, good hands, elusive running. We will see. At this time, he seems like the best prospect of the new receivers.

Here is a scouting report on him from his draft year of 2002.
Clarence Coleman, Ferris State (5-11, 182 lbs., 4.48)

Coleman had one of the most amazing careers in Division II history. He is the all-time leading receiver in NCAA Division II history in both total yards (4,983) and catches (323), while holding both the school and conference career records for most receptions and receiving yards. Coleman also has established single-season school records for receptions (97), receiving yards (1,519) and touchdowns (15). His final career totals include 4,983 receiving yards on 323 catches in 42 games. He recorded over 100 yards in receiving in 27 games and is the all-time NCAA Division II leader in career receptions and yardage. Coleman's 8,009 career all-purpose yards and 49 career touchdowns include 5 punt returns and 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns. Coleman is very elusive in the open field, has deceptive speed and accelerates past defenders when the ball is in the air. He runs crisp routes, is not afraid to go over the middle and plays bigger than his size indicates.

Is he the big target deep threat we'd all hoped for? Unless he grew 5 inches taller overnight, no. But let's all just take a deep breath and see what he can do out there tonight before writing off this current recruiting class of receivers.

Is this the same Clarence Coleman that played for the Buffalo Bills a few years back?

That would be the man. Coleman from the Bills. If anything, be just might turn out to be another Terry Vaughn! Not big nor fast but consistent with YAC. Guys like Merv or Ray Alexander just don't grow on trees! :sigh:

Good points, also unless the OC is planning on throwing the long ball it may not really be an issue.

For the WR position, Roy and Wally need to look at NFL cuts in a few months time.

Great hear from you again WCJ…You've been too quiet lately.

Let's hope that Coleman will have a great outing tonight and show us something we have not seen in a long time in BC, a wide out with deceptive speed, with great vertical leaping potential.

As you say it should have been our most important requirement in the off-season!

Thanks, PigSkin.

Buono and his personnel gurus, O'Billovich and Shivers, over the years have found an abundance of talent at all positions. The one area for which Buono has not been able to install stars in his tenure with the Lions is import receivers. Of course Geroy was already with the Lions when Buono arrived after being sent packing by the comical F-Troop in Calgary.

Someone may emerge from this crop of new receivers (the survivors are Coleman, Poole, and Skillern). If he does, it will be after a quiet start at Training Camp.

A sudden star wideout could emerge quickly, slowly, or not at all. It remains to be seen.

One can hardly complain, however. Perhaps the football gods think it would be unfair to all other CFL coaches, if Buono could find all the players, at all the positions, for which he relentlessly searches.

Let us hope that the Football Gods in their mirth, handing the riders their third GC last season have celebrated in wee bit too much, and are too hung to be much of a worry to our aspirations this season Joe!

The Stamps seem pretty set at import receivers with Lewis, Copeland and Rambo.

Maybe the Lions need to look at their final cuts. Hufnagel said he was impressed with Chris Jackson who has good size at 6-foot-2 and Williams who caught the final TD is listed at 6-foot-3.

Other than Holley, the Lions didn't recruit a WR who is over 6-feet.

I am not that impressed by Coleman as the lions coaches seem to be. Maybe he will show me in game 1.

Now what was wrong with Kendrick Jones again. Seems like we have a bunch liabilities at that import spot. I cant be that hard to find a competent reciever that is comfortable being the fourth reciever.!?

I would say just sign a tall fast kid, 6'1" 200 lbs, with good hands, then teach him how to play and stick with him. Then mabey in a couple of years you might have the next Merv Fernandez...as it is obvious they can't find one.
