Actually, the chop block call was the right one, albeit a rule that doesn't get dusted off very often.
Thanks Lionut..I thought the defensive player had to be engaged with another offensive lineman when the chop block occured. Haven't seen it called before but based upon the rule it was the right call.

Here are some very interesting stats that compare the 2004 and 2006 Grey Cup games:

2004 Grey Cup

Passing 18/27/201
Rushing 26/196
Total Offence: 396

Individual:

Passing: Dickenson 18-27-201-1-0.
Rushing: Warren 18-160, Dickenson 8-36.
Receiving: Clermont 4-71, Thelwell 3-39, Green 3-35, Simon 3-31, Warren 3/18, Brazzell 2-7.

2006 Grey Cup

Passing (comp/att/yds) 18/29/184
Rushing (att/yds) 27/161
Total Yards (Net) 289

INDIVIDUAL:

PASSING: DICKENSON: 18-29, 184 Yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

RUSHING: SMITH: 16 carries for 72 yards, DICKENSON: 6 carries for 53
PIERCE: 1 carry for 0 yards

Our offence performed better in the 2004 Grey Cup game than the 2006 Grey Cup victory. Dickenson threw for less yards in the victory on Sunday and Smith rushed for less yards. The difference this time around..great defense and excellent special team play. Just proves that defense wins championships and perspective changes when a team wins. In 2004 Dickenson received criticism and in 2006 he wins the MVP award. Go figure!

A recent thread said Dickenson had signed an extension. I have not heard anything that confirms that. Also, there was a post that said Buck's bonus was part of his salary. Not true. Buck's salary is over 200,000 a season and the 100,000 signing bonus is not factored in..so his salary will be over the 250,000 mark for the next two seasons and may become higher if he becomes our starter.

The way things are looking, at least right now is that the Leos are going to pick up Dickenson's option for next season and they will go with Buck in 2008 as the starter. Of course things can change quickly in pro football so who really knows.

The great thing about developing quarterbacks in our system is that we have great depth. The challenge is how to deal with the situation best.
Guess, overall, its a good problem to have!!

Since Blitz did a statistical comparison of the 2004 and 2006 Grey Cup performances by the Lions, I'll do a similar thing with the 2006 vs. the 2000 Grey Cup Lions. In both games, they faced the same team.

TEAM STATISTICS

First Downs
2006: 20
2000: 26

Net Yards
2006: 184 passing + 161 rushing - 56 losses = 289 yards
2000: 234 passing + 260 rushing - 18 losses = 476 yards

Turnovers Created By
2006: 2 fumble recoveries + 0 interceptions = 2 turnovers forced
2000: 0 fumble recoveries + 2 interceptions = 2 turnovers forced

Sacks By
2006: 3
2000: 2

Total Offence Allowed to Montreal
2006: 335 yards, 20 first downs
2000: 373 yards, 21 first downs

Time of Possession
2006: 33:28
2000: 33:42

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS

Passing
2006: DICKENSON: 18-29 184 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
2000: ALLEN: 18-31 234 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

Leading Rusher
2006: J. SMITH: 16-72, 0 TD, 0 Fum
2000: R. DRUMMOND: 10-122, 1 TD, 0 Fum

Leading Receiver
2006: P. JACKSON: 5-65, 0 TD
2000: D. BLAIR: 6-87, 0 TD

Punting and Kicking
2006: P. McCALLUM: 5 punts for 45 Avg, 6/6 FG, 19 Points
2000: L. PASSAGLIA: 3 punts for 43 Avg, 2/5 FG, 10 Points

So it looks like statistically, the 2000 Lions did a much better job on offence as the passer and leading rusher and receiver all had more yards. The big exception on offence that McCallum kicked 6 field goals while Passaglia was only good on 2. The time of possession was almost identical. On defence, there wasn't too big of a difference in yards allowed and they both forced two turnovers. But despite the 2000 team doing better overall offensively, total number of points scored was very close at 28 vs. 25. But the 2000 team allowed Montreal to score more points at 26 vs. 14 for the 2006 team (with 4 points coming off conceded safeties). Overall, the 2000 game was a lot closer with the margin of victory being only 2 as opposed to 11 for the 2006 game.

I suspect neither of these guys have, nor need, much free time to generate the information they do.

Thanks for the stats Robbie...I found it really interesting to read the stats comparison of our two Grey Cup games..and surprising in some areas. Right now I'm interested in seeing how the Leos will look back at this season, in terms of the changes they beleive they need to make. I really believe we gotta get Murphy signed now as our priority....he was only the best offensive lineman in the league in his first season, the leader of the offensive line, and created the attitude on offence that was such a key this past season. Just think how good he could be next year and he hardly gave up a sack all season!

Okay everyone, I've now given you statistics on the 2006, 2000, and 1985 Grey Cup wins. How about one more year of statistical comparison with the 1964 Grey Cup too! Below are the comparisons of the four Grey Cup wins.

TEAM STATISTICS
First Downs
2006: 20
2000: 26
1985: 16
1964: 15

2000: 234 passing + 260 rushing = 494 yards
1985: 394 passing + 121 rushing = 515 yards
1964: 153 passing + 161 rushing = 314 yards

Turnovers Created By
2006: 2 fumble recoveries + 0 interceptions = 2 turnovers forced
2000: 0 fumble recoveries + 2 interceptions = 2 turnovers forced
