It's David Braley's $$$, not Wally's. Wally has to work within the league's salary cap as well as the organization's budget. His willingness to cut longtime Lions may have a small impact on attracting free agents, but all teams cut players, all the time. It's part of the business, and I'd rather have a GM who's not afraid to make needed changes than one who makes poor football decisions out of loyalty.

That said, not sure if Walker can help, but we do need another option at RB.
I agree maxlion , all teams do the same thing cutting players just like Wally does. How else would you explain guys like Nic Lewis and Fred Stamps playing for the ALS now along with Logan ? I'm sure those two could share experiences with Logan .
The trouble with Wally signing free agents IMO is that he thinks we just don't need them because of our great scouting department .
There is a big diff. in how the Stamps and Nik Lewis parted ways as with Kevin Glenn who they had no choice on. Logan, Brown moves not as classy.

BC is not a FA destination and it's how they deal with vets who can still contribute.

But I doubt Walker is the key to BC but is he worth a look ? Maybe as they sure aren't lighting up the cfl with their USA finds lately.

Look at how Milanovich said Chad Kackert deserves a better ending to his story - SM's words- and look at how they kept him.

Wally dumps them.

Question is how would you get him on the field? He's an INT meaning as a backup he'd have to take one of the DI spots. Obviously Antolin would draw the short straw and someone else would return kicks.....Walker? He'd have to have more purpose than just to spell off Harris. Can't justify a DI spot on someone to be strictly a backup tailback. As a DI to get him on the field another INT would have to sit. Harris and an INT receiver and OL come out. Walker and a NAT OL or receiver go in.

This is the problem when your N depth is shallow. It is high risk to think Harris can carry the load by himself all year. Int RBs are a dime a dozen. Harris is pretty much one of a kind, or at least extremely rare. Gets tired? Gets nicked? Ouch ...

3 Ints in the O Line ... ouch.

Could sit down an I receiver. Not an easy adjustment for sure, and being in this situation is on the management from a long term perspective.

The Als got to suit up 3 Int runners. That shows some of their N depth, to allow that.

Mike Beamish offers more details on the addition Rainey and Dickson, including quotes from Neil McEvoy on Rainey's history of domestic violence allegations.
A fifth-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012, Rainey has twice been kicked off football teams over allegations of domestic violence.

The Steelers cut him after he pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge for slapping his girlfriend. In 2010, while at Florida, Rainey was dismissed from the team after his arrest on a felony charge of aggravated stalking and uttering threats. He later pleaded guilty to the misdemeanour stalking charge.

“We’re not condoning what he did,” said Neil McEvoy, the Lions director of player personnel. “But Citizenship and Immigration Canada cleared him to play in Montreal. He has a work permit until 2018. He paid his fine. And we all have backgrounds over incidents that we regret.”

On Rainy, while we all may have backgrounds that we would like to erase, I am sure that not many reach being charged with a couple of character infractions like Rainy. You have to think that it would be rather blind of any team to think that the two incidents were the only ones that he was involved with and just happened to be charged on both incidents.

That said, football teams aren't built with a group of angels, it takes men that are aggressive to thrive in this collision sport. My real issue with Rainy is that he had it made in the NFL, and still couldn't stay clean, can't see that improving at a CFL salary.

I know they like to get into wordplay with these things but has there ever been a more forced headline phrase than "pour Rainey"?
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Forgiveness is fine.

But the Lions are an enterprise that lives and dies on public perception. Return guys are available by the carload. Can't find one that fits with the stop violence to women theme?

This is very bad optics. :thdn:

^^Agreed. I was expecting to hear something from the Lions that would have included something about Rainy getting counseling. I'm not saying that he did or didn't, but since no mention was made, then I assume he did not get counseling. Bad optics indeed.

Tinkering?

Bring in a slow LB

Bring in a small, fast RB with a history of troubles

To quote Vince Lombardi: "What the he** is going on around here?"

IMO we could use a back like Walker to spell Harris. Share the work load.

While we do require an upgrade of the talent here, and in key positions, it all starts with the coaching...even this lineup can be a north of .500 playoff team with the right schemes that play to our strengths. It seems like the Lions have gone through this break with the same old crap mantra...its all just execution...a few new troubled faces will change all of that.

As I said last week, the Lions have NOT hit bottom yet, this thing looks like it is going to get a lot worse before it changes for the better. There is massive denial going on here, with Lion's personnel across the board not doing their jobs! IMO, Walker might help a little for the short term, but is no answer.

Report: Bombers to sign running back Chevon Walker

CFL.ca Staff

TORONTO - According to a multiple sources and a report by CFL.ca writer Justin Dunk, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are close to signing recently released running back Chevon Walker to a deal.

Walker was cut by the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday after the team decided to move forward with Jeremiah Johnson at the position.

The 28-year-old averaged 3.7 yards per carry and ran for 287 yards through six games with the club.

Winnipeg lost lead back Paris Cotton to a broken arm earlier in the year. Cameron Marshall had been filling in as the starter since. The Bombers rank last in total offence per game and sixth in rushing yards per game.

More to come...

Wonder if he'll be able to stay out of the trainer's room there? Entering this season he'd missed 24 of his teams' 54 games including 20 of 36 in 2013 & 2014.
