It's still three weeks away but the 2018 Winter Olympics will be starting soon enough in PyeongChang, South Korea. It's a third time charm for them after losing the 2010 games to Vancouver and again in 2014 to Sochi. Who remembers the last time South Korea hosted the Olympics - back in the September 1988 when it was held in Seoul. In those games, Canada only won 10 medals and was forever tarnished over the Ben Johnson doping.

One difference compared to the previous Winter Games since 1998 is that NHL players will not be participating in the men's ice hockey tournament.

And South Korea already started some controversy by competing as a unified country even though North Korea can very well be the most dangerous and notorious nation at this point of world affairs. And Canada has a fairly large ethnic Korean-Canadian population - I wonder which country they will root for. At least for sure, there won't be a real contest for both men's and women's ice hockey tournaments between the two countries, and a direct contest for representatives for both countries would be Speed skating and Figure skating.

No Canadian medals yet.

I remember back in 1992 Winter Olympics which occurred shortly after the dissolution of the former USSR, the newly independent countries were called Unified Team. Now, even though Russia was banned because of doping, their athletes were still allowed to participate as Olympic Athletes from Russia. Let's see if they will remain in the top 3 on the medal standings as they usually do in the former USSR/Unified/Russia.

Yeah, won by Max Parrot and Mark McMorris respectively. But for better or worse, both of them were capable of striking gold which went to an American.

Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris won the first-ever Winter Games gold medal in mixed doubles curling on Tuesday.

Bronze in women's luge and 500-metre short-track.

------------
Hey sj-roc, for your curling games have you always played in a 4-person team or have you tried the recent mixed doubles combination which appears to be gaining popularity in light of its entry into the Olympics.

I believe for the longest time, the only Olympic events in which men and women are teammates and perform together are the various forms of figure skating - Pairs Skating, Ice Dancing, and most recently Team Figure Skating.

Even though it's not good to mix business with pleasure, I've taken a look at the biographies of Olympic pair figure skating medalists, and over half of them get married to their partners. Locally, Jamie Salé and David Pelletier did marry each other though they eventually divorced.

With the introduction a second co-ed Olympic event in the form of mixed doubles curling, let's see if it start a romantic trend like pair figure skating and if Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris will marry.

Men's hockey, Canada and Czech Republic tie 2-2 in regulation and OT, with Czech winning in the shootout. Reminds me of 20 years ago in the semifinal when both teams were tied 1-1, and the Czech Republic prevailing in the shootout.

But a reminder to Canada, since 1994 NONE of the teams with purrfect records in the preliminary round (all wins {in regulation if applicable}, and no losses or ties) went on to win the gold medal.
