Surprised to see Ovechkin with Russia. I would have thought the IIHF would force rosters to be set well before he became available with Wsh's elimination by the Rangers on Wednesday. Apparently he even played in their semifinal against the US?

I don't think their U20 tournament allows such roster tinkering this late — or even at all once it starts. Even if there's an injury or suspension or whatever, you play a man short, no late adds. Not sure why the rules would be different here.

Not complaining, just an observation. IIRC Crosby was a late add for Canada, too, only not as late.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Thomas Plekanec was also a late addition to the Czech. He played against USA after being eliminated on Tuesday

Canada wins Gold with a convincing 6-1 win.

6-1 Final. This was easily the most one-sided showing by any team through an entire tournament. Of course, the weaker pool placement helped Canada pad those stats a lot during the preliminary round.

Interesting tidbit: Last time Canada won Gold beating Russia in the World Hockey Tournament was also in Prague in 1959.

This is not surprising at all. It was how it was set up when they used NHL players IIRC.

The Juniors run by different rules and they take more exhibition games to get ready. Juniors leave their teams still playing. NHLers teams are done.

I hoped to see the game but didn't see it on HK channels.

I know NHLers from many countries have joined the tournament in progress before. I just didn't think they were allowed to do so at such a late stage, when it was nearly over.

Good result.

Nice to see the Canadian NHL pros doing it for their country. Sounds like Hamhuis played well.

Jagr is amazing. As he has aged, I notice his character and his commitment to his country more and more. His talent has always been spectacular.

I recall when he joined the Penguins they called him Mario Jr --> Jaromir ...

It has been awhile since I have seen as complete a Canadian efforts at an international tournament. Probably the 2005 World Junior squad was it where they basically ran pillar to post over the opposition.
They coincidentally beat Russia 6-1 on that occasion as well.

A tournament whose gold medal game also featured Crosby vs Ovechkin and Malkin. No "Double Dion" this time though.

I am going to add the Canadian Women's result in there as well. The women's team got killed with poor officiating and just took the penalties without complaint, a real eye opener for the men's team to follow that gold winning performance in 2010.

n this IHLF tourney, the Canadian side just skated the opposition teams into the ice, were very diciplined and were rewarded. Just a treat to watch. Hamhuis was playing about three notches above his Canuck play. The bigger rink is where his game gets noticed.
