I agree, I thought Hamhuis had a very good tourney, he was often involved in plays that led to scoring. Good passes, smart pinches, solid getting the puck of the defensive zone. Mind you, they all played pretty damn good in that regard so really a thumbs up to all. Even Tyler Seguin after his silly Sedin comment. He played very well. It was nice to see some of these names that don't always get the name recognition. It showed me just how good some of these players really are and the creativity around some of the goals was pretty much hockey at it's purest.
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

Many of the Russian players left the ice during the post-game playing of O Canada. Some remained including Ovechkin and Malkin as this article notes but the Russian IHF could face disciplinary measures.

Team Russia could face sanctions for leaving ice before ‘O Canada’ following loss at world hockey championship
The Canadian Press | May 18, 2015 2:36 PM ET

PRAGUE, Czech Republic — Russia’s hockey team may end up paying for its Canadian anthem snub.

Russian news agency TASS reported the Russian team is facing sanctions after players left the ice before O Canada. The Canadians crushed Russia 6-1 in Sunday’s gold-medal game, and most of the Russians quickly departed for the dressing room, a breach of the sport’s etiquette.

“Once we arrive back home after the world championships we will look into this question and we will get in touch with those in charge at the Russian Ice Hockey Federation,” IIHF president Rene Fasel said in the statement to TASS.

“The IIHF has its own protocol and some sort of punishment will be handed down.”

According to TASS, Alexander Ovechkin, Yevgeny Malkin, Viktor Tikhonov and Dmitry Kulikov were among the few players who remained on the ice for the anthem.

Russia’s general manager Andrey Safronov called the incident “a shame.”

“Nothing forced our team to leave the ice and it was simply an organizational mistake and it was our mistake and not the one of the organizers,” Safronov told TASS.

“We are feeling very ashamed and uncomfortable now and on the behalf of the national team I bow to the Canadians,” Safronov said. “I am lost for words and can say only that there was nothing of a premeditated nature in the incident.”

Canada’s victory was its first at the world tournament since 2007.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

2017 Paris-Cologne edition begins with Canada winning their first game 4-1 over Czech Rep, and hometown Germany goalie Thomas Greiss pulling off quite the feat of surviving the USA's 43 shot onslaught 2-1.

Once again, Canada appears to be fortunate to be in the weaker Pool B. Today's game was against one of the tougher teams (along with Finland) they will face in the Preliminary Round. Their roster is composed notably of NHLers from PHA (5), COL (4), 2 each from FLA, WPG and TB.

Of the first round elimination teams, only Chad Johnson, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Mitch Marner accepted invitations to join the team. IMO, they are bit weak in goal. Pickard did win Gold last year, but played only 2 out of 10 games as the backup to Cam Talbot.

2018 in Denmark some surprising results in today's Quarterfinals. Canada advances in OT over Russia and will face Switzerland who upset Finland.
The USA advances to face Sweden in the other Semi on Saturday.
Russia goes home with nothing. :yahoo:
Canada's only weakness is in goal. Darcy Kemper and Curtis McElhinney (rumour is he's nursing an injury) have not been good, and it will take overwhelming firepower (which they have in abundance) to win Gold.

Can't believe Canada lost to Switzerland 3-2 in the semi final. They will play the US for the bronze medal.

Canada losing to the Swiss isn't without precedent--the same thing happened last year in a 3-2 OT loss in the preliminary round.

Canada out-shot them 45-17. Once again, Kuemper was not good enough. It's a shame we couldn't get better goalies who were available and willing to go.

At least we were spared being blown out by Sweden tomorrow. It's funny Nilsson has a good shot at Gold after such a disappointing season with the Canucks. If they win, he should be the tournament MVP.

Goaltending has been subpar the whole series.

Interesting that goaltending has been sub-par at Worlds (for Canada), whereas goaltending is the major reason that Vegas and Tampa Bay are one game away from eliminating their opponents.... just like in football, where the QB is such a critical position, goaltending can make or break a team...

After watching the battle of underachievers in which the USA made fewer mistakes than Canada (not to mention 6 straight penalties), wow what a Gold Medal game.

Switzerland was so close to the upset of the century--too bad they just fell short in the SO. (It's fair to say if Nashville hadn't been eliminated when they were from the NHL postseason, they wouldn't have gotten this far.)

It looked like Nilsson was going to be run over by his teammates celebration the same way Lundqvist was last year, but I think he was a bit more ready for impact.

Patrick Kane wins tournament MVP. Watching the postgame interviews, it was obvious the USA players felt fortunate to be going home with a Bronze (they sure didn't do much to deserve it). Canada beat themselves first with sub par goaltending, then (after fixing that with McElhinney) with undisciplined play today. McDavid spent most of his game killing penalties.

Too bad the Sedins were not part of Team Sweden's roster to add another gold medal to finish off their playing careers.

Germany and Switzerland are now teams to reckon with in international ice hockey now. Ten years ago, both countries were essentially no-names in the world of ice hockey.

With all due respect to the annual Ice Hockey World Championships, I'd say in terms of world popularity and prestige it is not as famous as the other major international ice hockey tournament - the Olympics. And as such, I'd say a bigger upset of the century would have been had Team Germany captured the gold medal over Team Russia for the 2018 Olympic Gold medal game.

And in all fairness though......there are far fewer Germans and Swiss playing in the NHL and as such their roster may contain the top players on those two countries. On the other hand, this year the NHL didn't allow their players to play in the Olympics, and if their NHL team to advanced to the second round of the playoffs they wouldn't be able to play Ice Hockey World Championships either because of scheduling conflicts. And as such, the rosters for Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech, and Slovakia may not necessary be made up of the best players from that country. So while Team Germany and Team Switzerland should be happy for their second place finish, they should be aware that they didn't necessary face the best competitors.
