Yeah it's not what you earn, it's what you save. Avery was particularly disadvantaged moneywise (as far as NHLers go) from having to start his career in Detroit. I haven't looked at the details in a long time but I recall reading somewhere that Motown is one of highest income tax jurisdictions in America. They have not just the federal and state level income taxes but the city of Detroit even collects something like a 2% municipal income tax from all residents, on top of whatever other municipal taxes you'd be on the hook for. IIRC they also collect a smaller marginal rate (something like 1%) from people who don't even live within Detroit city limits but who nonetheless commute to work there. It's probably not the most significant factor for why the population of Detroit has been in a downward spiral for such a long time, but I certainly wouldn't think it helps.

Also, on another aspect of this story: what with the likes of Gary Roberts and his spartan training/dietary regimen having such a presence in the NHL these days, not to mention the high expectations that come with multi-million dollar contracts, I'm a little surprised that teams don't seem to greatly monitor or put too much controls on what and how players eat particularly when they travel. Maybe players are expected to police themselves here but I could see how younger less disciplined players might have problems keeping on the straight and narrow. Maybe they already face this scrutiny at the junior/NCAA level and the ones who make the cut from there are the guys who succeed in the pros.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

NHL All-Star Draft

Hilarious that Phil Kessel was traded for Seguin. Seguin was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins using Toronto's 1st round pick in a trade for Kessel. Great that the players were having fun with this.

Poor Leaf Nation. 9 consecutive defeats. Shut out 4 times this month. Somewhere Randy Carlyle is laughing while collecting his pay cheque from the Leafs.

Interesting but not surprising. The guy was tool as a player, it doesn't surprise me that he wasn't that smart about his money. Simple rule. Live within your means. Don't give a hoot about appearances. If you need to drive a used Bronco, drive a used Bronco. I have a hard time feeling pity for a guy whose annual salary is in the plus million dollar a year range. Oh poor me, I only have about 600,000 per year in disposable income. I don't have to pay for a lot of my food or drink or transportation, work picks that up and they still give me $100.00 dollars a day to pay for such things. Must be tough living the life of a working man :thdn:
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

I saw Bob Cole trending on twitter and thought that being in his 80s he'd died. Nope, he's just doing pbp for the Habs vs Coyotes game on CITY TV today.

I believe Ron Wilson - coach killer.

There are just a few odd guys in sports that for some reason despite their talent bring a team down and I am with Wilson here....

Cole seems to get the Sunday City-TV "Hometown Hockey" slot only now.

To me, he's always come across as a carnival barker in his approach to pbp. Good for funny sound bites of Cole-isms like "Relax, everybody, relax".

Now he's a carnival barker who can't see the numbers or names of the players. :rotf:

I keep hearing that one on 1040; what game was that one from, and the context? I want to say the 2002 men's Olympic gold medal game but not sure.

Wow, that recent, under 2yrs ago? It seems longer than that, that 1040's been running that sound bite.

I guess when you watch so many games over the years, they all kinda blur together after a while.

Leafs or as Ron Wilson (former coach) refers them as Uncoachables lost their 11th consecutive defeats, a new team record. The rebuilding has started as the Leafs unloaded Carter Ashton (son of former Canuck Brent Ashton) and David Brol to Tampa Bay for a draft pick.

The official dismantling and rebuilding of the Leafs has begun. Trade Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli to Nashville in return for Oli Jokinen and a first round pick. Franson and Santorelli must be happy to go from a bottom feeder to the top team in the NHL.
