Wonder if there is a deal in the works that US and Germany will play to a tie so both team advance.

I was thinking that too... Give their old World Cup team manager (who quit the job - not fired) a break and send him through to the round of 16 and Portugal hitching a ride home with Spain - just to give Spain help with the fuel.

The Germans and Austrians played footy that way in 1982 to ensure that both advanced and Algeria went home.

FIFA then changed the playing times so that teams didn't know the outcomes like they did then and know how to tweak the game.

This covers it here including why Germany would actually want to win the group.

With Italy eliminated now, I guess Italian-Canadians in Vancouver have to find another country to support. Who will Vancouver support? Neighbours down south in the USA perhaps, or France or maybe South Korea with the large Korean-Canadian population although South Korea in a must-win situation and must score several goals against Belgium while hoping that Russia and Algeria get a scoreless tie or Russia barely wins to win the goal differential.

Some nice stuff in the World Cup.

Shaqiri for Switzerland.

Mueller.

Neymar and Brazil.

Messi of course.

And some broken hearts. England goes home without a victory.
............

It is still comical to watch soccer players writhe in "agony" when they get brushed by an opponent, the ref, or even a teammate. Not quite like the pain and injuries suffered by football players and hockey players, it seems to me.

Luis Suarez suspended for 4 months for biting an opponent

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Soccer-crazy Uruguayans raged Thursday at FIFA's decision to kick their star player out of the World Cup for his third biting incident, fearing it could deal a death blow to their bid to win the sport's greatest tournament.

Uruguay's soccer federation said it plans to appeal the ban, which prohibits striker Luis Suarez from all soccer activities for four months. The ban also covers Uruguay's next nine international games, which rules him out of next year's Copa America. It will likely carry over to qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup.

Uruguayans of all stripes were nearly unanimous in their support of Suarez, calling the punishment excessive for what they felt was an act of immaturity.

"It feels like Uruguay has been thrown out of the World Cup," Uruguayan soccer federation president Wilmar Valdez said in Rio.

Diego Suarez, the striker's youngest brother who is also a soccer player, called the sanction an "unbelievable" decision that has saddened him.

Juan Jose Monzillo, a fruit and vegetable vendor in Uruguay's capital of Montevideo, saw conspiracy behind the decision by soccer's governing body.

"They clearly wanted to kick Suarez out of the World Cup. Uruguay is a small country that eliminated two big nations like Italy and England and it doesn't benefit FIFA to let Uruguay continue playing," said Monzillo, 48, who listened to the news about Suarez on headphones as he tended his stand.

Suarez bit the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's 1-0 win in the group stage on Tuesday, but escaped unpunished in the game itself as the referee did not see the incident.

"Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup, when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee, said in a statement.

But Uruguayans did not buy the explanation.

"The immorality and hypocrisy of FIFA has no limits. Neither does Chiellini's inclination for being a tattle-tale and a fink!" Luis Puig, a lawmaker for Uruguay's ruling Broad Front coalition said on his Twitter account.

This is the third time Suarez has been banned for biting an opponent, following similar incidents with Ajax in the Dutch league and Liverpool. He was given a 10-match ban by the Premier League for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013.

Besides the biting incidents, Suarez has been vilified for racially abusing an opposing player and for a handball on the goal-line during an earlier World Cup quarter-final. He also has been accused of having a penchant for diving.

But Suarez also stuns fans with moments of brilliance on the field, leaving some to compare him to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The Uruguayan striker for Liverpool was last season's player of the year in England's Premier League.

Valdez, the head of Uruguay's soccer federation, said that it was Suarez who was targeted for aggression by the Italians.

"When he falls, several substitutes insult him on the ground and some members of Italy's staff even came off the bench to try to hit him," Valdez said, suggesting FIFA should investigate Italy.

Any appeal by Uruguay must first go to the FIFA appeal committee, said FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer. If rejected, Suarez and Uruguay could take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"We should withdraw from the World Cup, because what they have done is so lamentable. But at least we can go forward with dignity," said former soccer player Robert Lima, who won several Uruguayan championship with the club Penarol.

Instead of blaming FIFA and Chiellini, Uruguayans should blame Suarez for putting his country in the predicament they now find themselves in. Undisciplined

After getting a look at the choppers on Luis Suarez, methinks Chiellini better get a tetanus shot.

I guess Luis forgot that the cameras were on, with millions watching. :dizzy:

And then Chiellini suffers another bite, this time from a maid at his hotel. LOL

And this is why I don't like Soccer. Hate to see teams lose it on penalty kicks.

Mexicans must be devastated at today's results. They were mere minutes of eliminating Netherlands when the Dutch scored the equalizer and then got the winner on a penalty shot in extra time.

And a devastating loss for Greece.

Penalty shots are riveting to watch, if you do not have any particular investment in the outcome. For the players? Yikes. For the fans? Yikes.

I used to think the pressure was on the goaltender. But I can see that it is much more on the shooters. The keeper generally guesses one way or the other. Some shooters actually send a soft one down the vacated middle. But the pressure! ... Yikes.

On the miss by the Greek ... He seemed to play a "safe" shot just to left of center. The keeper had guessed correctly and deflected it.

On the winning shot for Costa Rica, it seemed the keeper guessed correctly also, but just failed to deflect the shot, which looked almost identical to the shot by the Greek player. Narrow margin of victory.

Penalty shots to determine the winner is ridiculous in games such as the World Cup

Germany defeated Algeria 2-1 in overtime and France beat Nigeria 2-0. Germany and France will play on Friday. That should be a battle.
