It doesn't seem too long ago when the Canucks were playing game seven, but it's the NHL playoff time again. After a somewhat slow start, the Canucks have won the Presidents' trophy again. Of course, that doesn't mean much unless if you are talking about home ice advantage.

Unlike last season, there are no exceptional individual player as there's no Art Ross or Jennings winner after the regular season. Unlike last season in which there were notable injuries in defense, it looks like the notable injury now is Daniel Sedin who hopefully will return soon. He's been skating hard in practice today. The Canucks will have to find a way to get past Vezina trophy candidate Jonathan Quick. Luongo will likely start in goal.

Go ;canucks: !

I voted 'lose the Stanley Cup final'. I'd love to be wrong and have them win it. I think any team from the Western Conference is a feasible choice. NHL playoffs are IMO, the easiest playoffs to allow a Cinderella team go a long ways. Obviously the Canucks don't fit that description.

The playoff series I'm looking forward to seeing (outside of the Nucks/Kings of course) is the Flyers/Penguins. Close in points and obviously dislike each other perhaps even more than most teams.

how far back do we have to go to find a better duo than crosby and malkin.

they should just give the cup to the penguins now.

I enjoyed the two games I caught (the Penguins/Flyers and Nucks/Kings). Thought the home team would win both but both homers lost. Can't hang this loss on Luongo (IMO). I didn't object to the calls I saw either. I just hope these kinds of things are kept consistent. In other words, snowing goalies should be the kind of call that gets made (like it did to Kesler). I always hated that. Seems small time, like the glove face wipe etc.... Guess we'll see how this series plays out...

the Canucks hit the road like an egg falling off the table (to quote Jim Taylor circa 1980's?)

What's all this talk about starting Schneider in game 3 ? Goaltending is not the problem the Canucks are trailing the series

IMO, goaltending is not the problem either (Quick's efforts or Luongo's). OTOH, I wouldn't mind seeing Schneider play. I'm not a regular Canuck follower but there is some chatter (amongst some media/fans----John Garrett for eg.) that the Canucks play stronger in front of him. I don't see why it would matter much. Certainly, Luongo is not why they have lost either game that I saw.......

On a slightly different tangent Canada won the Women's Championship defeating their rival Team USA 5-4 in overtime

I don't like NHL 2012 playoff hockey. No not because the Canucks are about to be knocked out. I just don't like the rough edge thats there on most of the series. Running goalies, head shots, glove face wipes etc.... The great change in discipline Brendan Shannahan? Getting some of the same complaints about him this season and heard nothing but good things when he started. Its a rough job, I wouldn't want it. Deciding whats a suspension and how much. At the same time there does seem to be a wide variance on whats over the line. And if you are a big name or not. Guess we'll see.

I'll probably just watch playoff hockey on the weekends once the Canucks are done. I do hope the extra rough edge I'm thinking is existing in this years playoffs dulls a bit. One suggestion I have is not to have the Linesmen jump in. Sometimes the crowd forms, waits for the Officials and then the 'tough guys' starting mouthing off and pushing/shoving.

The refereeing has been inconsistent at best. There is 2 standards; one for the regular season and one for the playoffs. Anything goes for the post season.

Well apparently the TV ratings for this years playoffs is way up in the States leading some to suggest its the rougher version of the playoffs thats leading the extra eyes watching. Another plausible explanation is apparently a lot of the playoffs is available without going through the cable provider. I always did feel fortunate here in Canada. In the preTSN days, the CBC pretty much ran the NHL and CFL and this is on a free station. That being said I'm glad TSN (and to a lesser extent Sportsnet) have entered the market. I can't imagine not being able to watch the playoffs due not having the right cable provider.

Prob doesn't hurt either that all but one (Dallas) of the league's 10 biggest US TV markets are represented in the playoff pool: NY, LA, Chicago, Philly, DC, Miami, Boston, SF/Bay Area and Detroit; each one north of 4M metro pop. Not sure how often that's been the case lately.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
