Just for fun I did some digging into last night's fireworks. They were arranged for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) who had a trade show at the VCC this past week. The fireworks event was announced on April 8 from Washington, DC as per the link below.

This was the day after the Canucks clinched their berth, although IIRC it wasn't yet clear at this point who they would face in round 1, so the playoff schedule would not even have been drawn up by this point. And of course the planning for the fireworks would have begun well before it was finally announced on that day. But hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory? ;)

ISRI2015’s final night [Sat Apr 25] celebration will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with the lighting of the Olympic flame – the same flame that presided over Vancouver’s Winter Olympic Games in 2010. ...[P]repare for a memorable night of ... fireworks.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

That would explain the fireworks. My dog was going crazy.

What a game this afternoon between the Habs and Senators. Habs win 1-0 on a goal by Brendan Gallagher.

7 goals and questionable decision to dump the guy who got them to playoffs while Miller was hurt.

Much like Wally not playing the 2004 CFL MOP in the Grey Cup game.
When the Flames scored the 3rd goal in game 6, Miller should have been pulled. It was obvious that he doesn't yet have the range of movement to perform adequately--he said so himself. Other coaches have been quick to make effective in-game goaltender changes this season (see Chicago and Calgary).

I look forward to seeing a real battle in the Ducks-Flames series. The Canucks would have had no chance against them anyway.

It is odd that they didn't pull him and in some ways it is odder that they chose to insert him knowing that Miller guy seems to need to get into a certain space and rhythm to be at the top of his game and unless the other guy failed it seemed odd that they'd want to dump him. In a playoff series where momentum going against you can be hard to overcome versus a different team every night where he can suck one night and stand on his head the next why you'd not ride the goalee who got you there is a mystery.

Next year this coach has got to give time and space to bring these younger players on. It doesn't have to be Edmonton - sink or swim - but better than they did this season.

Now that the Canucks are gone, what team will you root for? Will you have an affinity for:

1. Remaining Canadian-based teams - Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames - may they have a rematch of the 1986 and 1989 finals?
2. Ex-Canucks veterans - notably Ryan Kesler and his Anaheim Ducks?

On that second note, I'm sure some Canuck fans were secretly glad that former ex-Canucks veterans Matt Cooke and Willie Mitchell won Stanley Cups with other teams.

Matt Sekeres was discussing how, in the 2010 World Junior Championship Gold Medal Game, head coach Willie Desjardin's cautious, slow response likely cost them the Gold. He kept goalie Jake Allen (now with St. Louis) who was clearly struggling, in too long, while the US coach changed his goalie a period earlier.

Desjardins is a good coach as long as his systems are working (rolling 4 lines, no matter what). I think we are finding out why this is his first chance at the NHL. (After a long successful minor league coaching career.)

I want to see Vigneault win it this year. Blackhawks-Rangers or Ducks-Rangers would both be fun finals to watch.

The Habs will eventually fail due to their lack of offense. Price's (Vezina-worthy) goalkeeping can only carry them so far. They were lucky to get past the Sens. I don't see the Flames getting past the Ducks.

I will be cheering first for teams that have never won, ie: minnisota and Washington. After that, NRY, Mont, and\or Detroit if they get in.

too soon for Anaheim and Chicago to get it again. Calgary just not much chance. Hope they beat Anaheim though.

Washington advances to meet the New York Rangers. Islanders can only mustered 11 shots in the entire game and 8 of them came from the sticks of defencemen.

Washington takes game 1 scoring with 1.3 seconds remaining for a 2-1 victory over New York. The Rangers tied the game 4 minutes earlier.

Too bad that the Canucks could not easily dominate the Flames in game 1 like the Ducks did.

Very exciting fast paced 1st period between Montreal and Tampa Bay. Scoreless tie, Canadiens rang two shots off the goal post.
