As for the Lynch and his reluctance to do media, I wonder if someone could get a 'medical' exemption? If a person could prove (via a legitimate assessment) that they could not do inteviews and/or doing said interviews was causing them undue stress/anxiety, perhaps exemptions could be granted....? I'm being sincere here. Some just have issues with these kinds of things and have legitimate reasons. IMO, however, not wanting to speak to the media NEEDS to be consistent. Some players like chatting/speaking after successful games but are unwilling after losses. That is not acceptable, IMO. I love the kinda guys that are quick to be able to answer and be sincere after LOSSES too. Peyton Manning is a great example of this, IMO. Even if it wasn't his fault, he's gonna take some of the blame.....

I can't believe I didn't babble about this yesterday because I did see it live. One NY Giant (Odell Beckham Jr?) make an incredible ONE HANDED catch. It was a beauty. There was some chatter about this being the MOST AMAZING EVER! On some levels, probably it was. However, due to what was riding on the game and how it impacted things (like probably ending the first UNDEFEATED season since the Dolphins) was David Tyree's up against the helmet catch......

The aspect of that TD catch that stood out most to me was the fact that the review of the play — the NFL, like the CFL, does automatic reviews of all scoring plays — came DURING A TV TIMEOUT. They didn't boot the convert (maybe I should say PAT since this is NFL?) until after returning from commercial. I hope the CFL was paying attention.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Holy Moses...I guess the Jets really are that bad--getting undressed 38-3 in neutral Detroit tonight. Michael Vick completes 37% of his passes for all of 76 yards. Kyle Orton has been manna from heaven for the Bills, going 24/32 for 230 yards and 2 TDs tonight. Here's the recap:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411240 ... &tab=recap

Re Beckham, here's a video of him catching one-handed in warm-ups (wonder whether he can do it with his left hand too):

http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/11/ ... in-warmups,

and here are some stills of Beckham's catch from last night's game:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/25/sport ... cture.html.

The guy must have big hands!

Edit: Just checked it: 10" hands--almost as big as Russell Wilson's. Blinding speed (4.43) too. Something Giants' fans can be happy about in a pretty lean year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ravens go into N'awlins and pick up a win. Drew Brees goes 35/45 for 420 yards and 3 TDs, and the Saints lose. I'm no fan of the Ravens, but I'm glad to see Seahawks cast-off Justin Forsett do well, picking up 182 yards rushing (and picking up the slack--and then some--for the loss of Ray Rice). Saints now 4-7 and tied for first in the NFC-South. Has Sean Payton lost his offensive groove? Has Rob Ryan's defense turned into Swiss cheese? We might see a 6-10 team make the playoffs. Recap:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks as if the AFC-North is once again the toughest division in the AFC, with all four teams 3 games above .500 (or, I guess, technically 2.5 games over .500). In contrast, we have the NFC-South with all four teams 2.5 games below .500).

AFC North sets new mark with all teams three games over .500
Posted by Josh Alper on November 25, 2014, 10:43 AM EST

The NFL has one of the least accomplished divisions in history this year in the NFC South, where even the 2-9 Buccaneers harbor hopes of winning a division title.

A big reason for the division’s futility has been their general inability to win games against teams from other divisions, including the AFC North. Monday night’s Ravens victory over the Saints leaves the AFC division with a 10-1-1 edge over their NFC counterparts this season, a mark that has helped the AFC North make a little history.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Baltimore’s move to a 7-4 record makes the AFC North the first division in NFL history to have all of its teams at least three games over .500 at the same time. Ravens coach John Harbaugh referenced that collective success after Monday night’s win.

“It’s big. You’re going to have to win a lot of games to win the division,” Harbaugh said in his postgame press conference. “You’re going to have win a lot of games to make the playoffs in our conference. It’s just a fact. You’re going to need every win you can get. To get this win was very big. Next week’s going to be even bigger.”

With no intra-division games on tap in Week 13 (and two games against the NFC South), everyone in the division could be four games over .500 heading into the final four weeks. That would guarantee the year would end without a losing record among the four teams, but at least one of them won’t be going to the playoffs regardless of how good everyone is when Week 17 comes to an end.

More on the less-than-informative Marshawn Lynch interview:

No fine for Lynch’s “yeah”-filled press conference
Posted by Mike Florio on November 26, 2014, 4:25 PM EST

Two Sundays ago, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch avoided reporters. He was fined $100,000 for the infraction.

This past Sunday, Lynch talked to reporters, primarily by repeatedly saying “yeah,” even in response to questions that didn’t call for a yes/no answer.

So will the NFL fine Lynch for failing to comply with the spirit of the media policy? Nope.

Per a league source, Lynch hasn’t been fined for his latest shenanigans. It’s likely, however, that the league won’t tolerate that approach on a regular basis.

After Texans running back Arian Foster repeatedly said that he’s just trying to be a good teammate during a session with reporters, the NFL warned him that he could be fined if he engages in similar shenanigans in the future. So if Lynch opts for “yeah” as a standard response to reporter questions, the NFL eventually will say “yeah” when asked if Lynch has been fined.

This little bauble from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk about today's Thanksgiving Day games:

Thanks NFL for giving us three great games today
Posted by Mike Florio on November 27, 2014, 10:15 AM EST

On Thanksgiving, the NFL enjoys a captive audience. With a trio of games starting at 12:30 p.m. ET and lasting possibly until midnight, monitors throughout America will be bouncing from CBS to FOX to NBC.

As Costanza said when asked why anyone would watch a show about nothing, “Because it’s on TV.” Whatever NFL games would be on TV today, we’d all be watching.

But the NFL has given us a trio of great games, involving five of the seven NFC teams vying for the five playoff spots that won’t go to the none-of-the-above NFC South. It starts with Bears-Lions, a Thanksgiving matchup that has happened 10 prior times. It continues with the first of two games involving what turned out to be the top two teams in the NFC East, the 8-3 Eagles and 8-3 Cowboys.

And it finishes with the first encounter between the Seahawks and 49ers since January. That time, it was an elimination game. This time, it could have the same effect, knocking the loser to 7-5 and making it much harder to get to the postseason.

The biggest challenge for today? Staying awake for the whole thing after gobbling up plenty of gobble gobble gobble turkey from jive turkey gobblers.

Of course, the NFL’s goal isn’t entirely altruistic. Bigger games ensure even bigger audiences. Also, the sense of gratitude that comes from having compelling games broken out from the scrum of Sunday action helps strengthen the bond with customers.

Regardless, it worked. Thank you, NFL, for choosing great games for the fourth Sunday in Thanksgiving.

The nationally-televised games on Sunday’s slate — Patriots-Packers and Broncos-Chiefs — aren’t too shabby, either. As to Monday night and the Dolphins at the Jets, well, I guess we can’t have everything.

Was able to get two of the three games in but have been working a little too much lately so snoozed through the Eagles/Cowboys matchup. Big win for the Eagles and perhaps the crowing over the Cowboys turnaround is a bit early. I still think one of the strengths of the Eagles offence is also a weakness. I didn't sleep through the entire game just parts.

I often felt the Eagles D was a little winded simply because their breaks were so short. IOW, the success the Eagles offence has with quick scores, can often put their defence in a double sticky situation. First a team NEEDS to comeback and second, the D has not had much time to rest. I'm sure its a problem the Eagles Defensive Coordinator IS NOT WORRIED ABOUT. They did seem to tighten up when it mattered and teams will have to take chances that the Eagles D can then take advantage of.....
__________________________________________________________________________--
Missed the Chicago LIons game (at work). I know it was the first of the three. Even if I'd had the day off I might have slept in and missed it regardless...
_________________________________________
The nightcap was a game I actually picked the 49ers to win. New home stadium, crucial home game against the defending champs who knocked you out of the playoffs last year. Then the 49ers went out and laid an egg, IMO. Was it good work by the Seattle team or bad work by SanFran? Not feeling confident enough as an X's and O's guy to say which, it was probably both. One thing does seem obvious. I like him as a human being but Johnathan Martin either needs to get stronger or think about moving to a league where his body type would make an impact. He was schooled tonight. Solid game and yes Pete Carroll nailed it. It will come down to turnovers so if we can take care of the ball, we'll be alright. He was right......

If this is the 2014 Seattle Seahawks, the rest of the NFC had better start getting ready. They look solid. This has been two games in a row with solid 16 point wins over division rivals. Maybe the division crown is not out of the picture. IMO, Arizona still has the inside track but we'll see. Good win and like Seahawks 2013 the defence OWNED the opponents while the offence did more than enough to WIN.

Great summaries, nota. I missed all three games (working during the first two and ferry-bound for the Seahawks-49ers), although I caught about 10 minutes of the Cowboys-Eagles.

First, Lions 34-Bears 17. From the recap (link below), it looks as if the Bears couldn't get untracked offensively, racking up only 13 yards rushing, and 269 total yards (as opposed to 474 for the Lions). This is somewhat surprising, but I guess has to be chalked up to the Lions' very solid defense. The Bears' defense, on the other hand, is Swiss cheese. The Bears are obviously done for 2014, something I wouldn't have predicted at the beginning of the season, when I thought that their offensive weaponry would win a lot of games. Here's the recap with Trestman's and Cutler's post-game comments:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411270 ... &tab=recap

Eagles 33-Cowboys 10. I was really surprised at this outcome, first that the Eagles won, and second, that the score was so lopsided. Looks as if Mark Sanchez had another good game (boy, has he seen his career resurrected in Philly), and Romo may have stunk. Eagles run wild (for 256 yards) all over the Boys' defense. Cowboys now 3-4 at home, 5-0 on the road. Glad to see the Eagles win this one.

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411270 ... e=boxscore

Seahawks 19-49ers 3. Again, really surprised by this one. 49ers were slight favorites, and I thought they'd win. From the recap, it looks as the 'Hawks defense was tremendous, holding the 49ers to only 164 total yards (while the Seahawks' offense racked up 379 against a good 49ers D). Also looks as if Russell Wilson completely outplayed Colin Kaepernick. His QB rating in this game was 118.7 to Kaepernick's 36.7. Seems from the recap as though Wilson was very successful at making the 49ers pay for blitzing him by evading the blitzers and finding the inevitable open receiver Great win for the 'Hawks. Tough remaining schedule, though: at Eagles and Cardinals; at home against the 49ers and Rams.

Final thought: wouldn't it be great if the 'Hawks could pry Martellus Bennett away from the Bears to join his brother, Michael Bennett. With Zach Miller back in 2015, he and Bennett would be an awesome double tight-end pairing. Sorta like the Patriots' Gronk and Hernandez a couple of years ago, and Gronk and Tim Wright now. Russell Wilson needs more sure-handed targets.

Well I'll take you up on the offer to comment even though I already have...

I ALSO, was surprised by the outcomes of both of these games Cowboys/eagles and 49ers/Seahawks!

WIth Sanchez, I really don't think its as complicated as it gets made out to be. You keep asking a round peg to fit in a square hole, on team with a defensive guru as head coach, I'm not surprised Sanchez has struggled. The comment that kept being made during the game and it makes sense, is Chip Kelly (an offensive coach) is providing a foundation for Sanchez to succeed. He's not a dropback PeytonManning type QB so why only give him that kind of offence? He's done well with rollouts and throws on the run etc... And soon the buttfumble WILL NOT be the #1 thing Sanchez is known for (but we ain't never going to forget it :rotf: ).

I hate bringing up this name but I must. One criticism sometimes brought about by CP's less enthused fans (I'd include myself in this category) was sometimes he had the Lions score TOO quickly. THis was often late in games but the general point is that when a team scores quickly their defense has to be ready to hold strong. I think the Eagles DEFENCE is BETTER than the stats say simply because they are over-worked. That meaning the Eagles Offence is quick and deadly but the drawback is low time of possession. Kelly has proven that TOP is a good stat like any but the important one is win/loss. I don't know what the average TOP per game is for the Eagles but its a stat that probably means less than it would for other teams. IOW, they can win easily even though the oppossing team may have the ball, even for a lot more time....

I was EVEN MORE SURPRISED by the outcome of the 49ers/Seahawks game. I really thought the 49ers would OWN their field and play a solid game but they did NOT. Was that the result of poor prep on their part? I don't think so, I think it was solid work by the defense.

I am NOT and NEVER WILL BE a Colin K. fan so his poor play did NOT surprise me. IMO, he is over-rated. Yes, he is an NFL calibre starting QB but I just don't see him deserving the pay he gets but its understandable considering he led his team to a Superbowl in his first year as starter and NFC Championship game the second. However, dramatic changes will have to occur to get them back there again, and how do you do that considering how much they are paying their starting QB. Seattle will have a similar problem getting Russell W. name on a contract soon....

Well, yesterday was primarily a CFL day, but there was some exciting action in the NFL too. Of the morning games, the best were the Chargers at Ravens and Saints at Steelers. The Chargers made a tremendous comeback at the end, with Philip Rivers throwing the winning TD pass with less than a minute remaining, and showing why he's considered a great quarterback. Here's the recap of that one:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411300 ... &tab=recap

The Saints went into Pittsburgh and played methodical, precise football, beating the Steelers despite Roethlisberger putting up 435 passing yards. The Steelers weren't sharp, whereas the Saints were firing on all cylinders, with a solid ground game from Mark Ingram and five TD passes from Brees. I was flipping back and forth between these two games. Here's the recap:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411300 ... e=boxscore

There were two good afternoon games. The Falcons surprised everyone by putting a beating on the Cardinals. The Cardinals had no ground game, and Matt Ryan put up 361 passing yards against what had been a terrific Cardinals pass defense until yesterday. The Cardinals are now 9-3, with the Seahawks one game back at 8-4. The Seahawks go into Arizona on December 21 for what could be the game that decides the NFC-West. Here's the recap:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411300 ... &tab=recap

The other afternoon game, and a great one, was the Patriots at Packers. The Packers played probably their best game of the season--at Lambeau--and sent the Patriots packing, 26-21. Aaron Rodgers put up 368 passing yards against a good Patriots defense, and the Packers run game was very solid. Watching this one, I never felt that the Packers had put it away until the very end. The Patriots may be the best team in the AFC (but see below about the Broncos), and the Packers may be the best in the NFC (although that too remains to be seen). This one was billed as a possible Super Bowl preview. Recap:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411301 ... e=boxscore

The Sunday nighter (which I missed) saw the Broncos do the expected and beat the Chiefs in KC. Looks as if Manning was pretty ordinary in this one, but the Broncos have discovered a running back, in C. J. Anderson--a fire plug at 5-8, 224 lbs.--who can carry the mail--racking up 168 yards against what had, up until this point, been a stout Chiefs defense. Anderson is a slightly beefier version of Ray Rice. The Broncos served notice that they are going to be tough to displace as AFC winners with all of a sudden a solid run game to complement Peyton Manning (not to mention a very good defense). Recap:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201411301 ... e=boxscore
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't know whether tonight's Monday Night edition will be much of a football game: Dolphins at the sorry Jets. The 6-5 Dolphins are still (although just barely) in the playoff hunt, and the 2-9 Jets have been pretty much a complete mess this season (except, perhaps, for their early-November win at home over the Steelers). Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill, although at times inconsistent, has been pretty good, with a 66% completion percentage and a 93.4 QB rating so far in 2014. The QB situation with the Jets, however, is a real cause for concern, as Geno Smith--the supposed franchise QB--has been lousy (QB rating of 67.4), and Michael Vick hasn't really been that good either (QB rating 68.4). The franchise is in turmoil, with many calls for the ouster of GM John Idzik, and the firing of Rex Ryan at the end of the season pretty much taken for granted. The story out of New York this past week is that the coaches wanted to start Vick in tonight's game, but were overruled by higher management (Idzik, owner Woody Johnson?). The logic might be to give Smith a stretch of the 5 remaining games to see whether he really is up to the job and, if not, draft or trade for a legitimate starting QB.

For the masochists (or just confirmed football nuts!) out there  , here's the preview again--Dolphins favored by 7:

Well the MNF game was not a classic but not a blowout either. Blowouts have been common in these types of games this season....

Cam Wake had a solid night. Nasty shot took him out late in the game but he returned so I doubt he's hurt.

Dolphins tried to make Geno Smith throw the ball but the jets insisted on running. I thought I was watching a college game or highschool game. Even on third down, the Jets often ran the ball.

Neither QB was exceptionally sharp, IMO. Jets led most of the game but the Dolphins kicked a late field goal to win it. This was the Dolphins SECOND win on the road out of 49 games, where they have trailed in the fourth quarter. IOW, this is NOT a team that has a habit of coming back to beat teams...... (that stat sounds awful but I wonder how some other teams are on this stat too?).....

Interesting, nota. I missed all but the 4th quarter. It seemed like a close, but somewhat uninspiring, game. Two supremely boring teams. Geno Smith went 7/13 for all of 65 yards. (Evidently, the Jets' total of 13 pass attempts is the fewest in the NFL this year.) Hard to see his performance strengthening his chances to be the future franchise QB. Here's the recap:

Not sure if this has happened before (almost definately not but maybe someday, sometime). The Cowboys played (as did the Bears) last Thanksgiving. Both teams are playing AGAIN, the following Thursday, but against each other instead of the teams they played last week (Bears/Packers Eagles/Cowboys). Think the Cowboys will have a strong game and they do better on the road that many would think.....

Yeah, nota, you're right; it is kind of odd schedule-wise. I agree that the Cowboys are the better team, but sometimes the Bears can be really tough at home in Soldier Field. It might be a decent game--two good quarterbacks. The Bears' defense is dreadful, though, so who knows? Here's the preview (Cowboys favored by 3.5):
