Well the domestic violence ads have begun. One of the groups partnering with the NFL has been able to begin running ads with the intention of getting this issue the attention it deserves. IMO, it seems obvious its a partnership with the NFL but the league smartly is maintaining a distance. IMO, this is probably so its efforts can be labelled as sincere.

Onto the games.....

Tampa Bay winless goes into Steeltown. Should be an easy win for Pittsburgh.....NOPE

The struggling 49ers give up a picksix, punt block for a TD and another kick return in the first half to an Eagles team that struggles in the first half scoring points......So of course, the 49ers win due to being able to eliminate ANY SORT OF RUN GAME. Some nice catches by both teams, in this game, IMO. I still think the 49ers broke the bank for an okay QB. Paying elite QB money, so when will they get that elite QB? Just my :2cents:

Then the Sunday Nighter...... A struggling Saints probably should lay a beating on the Cowboys. Apparently the Cowboys plan of rebuilding their O-line has come full circle. I have to admit they looked pretty good tonight. Drew B. and his offence started looking good but never quite got into it. I sure hope this isn't the season the Cowboys turn it around but I guess we'll see......

UGHH..... Chiefs destroy the Patriots. A head2head matchup of two classic AFL franchises.

Going in, I thought Brady would lead his team to a close win on the road in KC. WRONG! There has been a string of bad luck, IMO, in terms of the games on these NIGHTER (Thursday-Turdsday?) (Sunday-snoozeday?) (Monday-Moanday?) games. Patriots were destroyed on both sides of the ball. Its obvious that the offence for these Patriots will have to get better or will they even make the playoffs, let alone challenge in them?

The Oakland Raiders have figured out how to make the playoffs....FIRE THE COACH :dizzy:

Surprising, in part because it sounds like Carr has been doing okay as their new starting QB......

Good grief. Who saw this coming? The Brady-Belichick Patriots absolutely crushed by what most had thought a mediocre team this year. Unfortunately I missed almost all of it (ferry-bound), but, from the recap (below), it looks like a "good ole-fashioned butt-whupping." This Knile Davis must really be something. He appears to be a lot like the Seahawks' Christine Michael--5-10, 220+ lbs., outstanding upper-body strength, and with superb straight-line speed (4.37 for Davis; 4.43 for Michael). And I for one am glad to see Alex Smith have a terrific night. I wonder whether the talk of Tom Brady's decline might be hitting the mark. Too bad, if true; he has been easy to like.

I hadn't heard that but I don't follow the NFL that closely. Based on what I WATCHED, you are right NE looked awful. Did you see some/all of their other games? I had no idea they were struggling like this. Part of the problem of winning games I guess. They were 2-1 coming in but based on how they looked Monday Night....look out below.

And, the TWELVES have been challenged. The fans at Arrowhead Stadium are now the Guiness record holders for decibels again. Will the Seahawk fans have an answer and try to reclaim their title?

they lost to dolphins and chiefs, barely beat the raiders just by 1 td although they did womp the Vikings.

The first game of Week 5 is tomorrow night at Lambeau Field in Green Bay--Vikings at the Packers. Should be a Packers win, but it might be closer than expected. Status of Teddy Bridgewater is unclear at this point. If he can't go, expect to see Christian Ponder. The Packers need to get their rushing game untracked; they've been weak so far. You can't expect Aaron Rodgers to win every game by himself. The Packers' D needs to get better too. I'll miss it, damn it (the Packers are my second-favorite team), as I'll be sailing to the Gulfs. Here's the preview:

I've always wondered in cases in which an American State does NOT have an NFL team, then what team does most of their residents root for? Now, courtesy of Dick's Sporting Goods that just released a map of the top-selling jersey in each state, we have a general idea if team jersey sales represent the most number of fans for a particular team per state.

Image

It looks like in most cases the state roots for the closest NFL team geographically:

1. Oregon roots for the Seahawks.
2. The two Dakotas root for the Minnesota Vikings.
3. Maine and other northeastern states root for the New England Patriots.
4. Three neighbouring states of Colorado root for the Denver Broncos.

But there are notable exceptions in which the state roots for a team that is much farther away geographically:

1. Nevada roots for the Indianapolis Colts instead of the three California teams or the Cardinals.
2. Idaho roots for the Green Bay Packers instead of the Seahawks.
3. Montana roots for the Oakland Raiders instead of the Seahawks or the Broncos.
4. Nebraska roots for the Washington Redskins instead of the Broncos, Chiefs, or Vikings.
5. Alaska roots for the St. Louis Rams instead of the Seahawks.
6. Hawaii roots for the Carolina Panthers instead of the California teams.
7. Arkansas roots for the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of the many other neighbouring NFL cities.

And in cases in which the state has two or more NFL teams, then we now know which team is the more popular in that state:

1. In California, the 49ers are more popular than the Raiders and the Chargers.
2. In Texas, the Cowboys are more popular than the Texans.
3. In Florida, the Buccaneers are more popular than the Dolphins and the Jaguars.
4. In Pennsylvania, the Steelers are more popular than the Eagles.
5. In New York, surprisingly the Bills are more popular than the Jets and especially Giants even though in they are the most successfully in the recent past. Perhaps it's because the Jets/Giants actually play in New Jersey where the Giants are most popular.

But I did not see the biggest possible anomaly - a case in which a state does have an NFL team(s) but the most popular team in terms of jersey sales was NOT in that state.

--------------------

I hope SportChek could reveal similar information for the Canadian provinces/territories so that we will know:

1. In the four provinces in Atlantic Canada, which CFL team is the most popular?
2. In the three territories, which CFL team is the most popular?
3. In Alberta, what's more popular - Eskimos or Stampeders?
4. In Ontario, what's the most popular - Argonauts, Redblacks, or Tiger-Cats?
5. And since SportChek sells NFL jerseys too.....what is the most popular NFL team in every Canadian region?

Neat Robbie, thanks for posting........

IMO, it would be kinda neat to see a percentage map for each team. For e.g. what percent of people in each state support the Cowboys. I"m betting some teams have STRONG support in areas we might not think. Like Viking fans in Green Bay, Green Bay fans in Minnesota.

I see TONS of 49er jersies locally here in Vancouver. Its only been recently that Seahawk jersies have become regular sights, even at Lions games (a hot topic here, believe me  ).

As for your CFL questions, sure I'm curious, I'd read the report. No question the Riders would probably be the number 2 team in this neck of the woods anyways...

I think some of these conclusions could be somewhat overstated.

For one, the caption in the fine print at the bottom says it's only based on sales from the first three weeks of this season. Things could differ over the longer term.

Second, this only mentions the leader in each state, so we don't know the size of the plurality by which each state's leading jersey dominates. These states are relatively sparsely populated so the sample size from which the leader is noted could be quite small. The status of a state's titleholder could be rather volatile, or it might actually be quite stable; we haven't been told.

Third, the leading sales of a jersey might not really indicate rooting for such team at all. It might be indicative of an NFL player who was either born in or had a high-profile college career in a non-NFL state, and his NFL jersey is leading the way in sales in his birth (or alma mater) state. I don't follow the NFL or NCAA closely to know any clear instances of this, but it wouldn't surprise me, for example, if the Colts drafted a UNLV player in the first round in the last draft and he's making an immediate impact with Indy so his NFL jersey is selling like hotcakes back in Nevada. Or likewise the Raiders might have a high-profile former UofMontana player. In each case, it would be more a matter of people in a state rooting not so much for the team but a player on said team to which they have a pre-existing connection. Such players could shift teams in their NFL careers and take their jersey sales with them back "home".

Fourth, the correlation may in fact be quite good, but I wouldn't necessarily take it for granted that jersey sales are an exact proxy for rooting for a team, even after controlling for alma mater and other effects. Some people will root for a team without buying their jersey and the figure wouldn't reflect this.

The figure is only meant to reflect sales at this one particular chain (it could differ at other chains, or if one looked at combined sales from all vendors), over a three week period. The data should be considered accordingly.

The relative breakdown among contenders would be interesting to see in these cases; it may be close and volatile, shifting over time and with the on-field fortunes of the various teams (this is largely why the Steelers have an edge over the Eagles even though the latter play in a MUCH larger market). As for Buffalo, that city doesn't have a lot of other pro sports teams among which to dilute fan interest. Not sure if playing in NJ is much of a factor teams based in NYC. The regional breakdown within a state with more than one NFL team might be worth a look, too. I would think the 49ers and Raiders dominate on opposite sides of the Bay Area (or at least have a better showing on their "home" side of the bay than the other). As for SoCal you might see some Raider sales based on their LA years that would give them an edge in that area. The Chargers probably don't resonate once you get outside the San Diego area.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Well, can we change the name of Thursday Night football to Thursday Night BLOWOUTS! UGH.... and the other games have struggled a bit too (Sunday Night/Monday Night). It would be nice to see a game make it until late in the 4th.

I don't want to come across as an Aaron Rodgers hater (I'm not) but his stat line shows what kinda game this was. He was 12 for 17 and just under 160 passing! I'm not a hater simply because he crammed THREE TOUCHDOWN passes in that stat line. Bottom line is he JUST WAS NOT NEEDED TONIGHT. The Packers Defence scored enough ON THEIR OWN to win this game, and Aaron played just fine thank you. In fact, IIRC, he was cap on, clipboarding by the fourth quarter. I don't think he took one snap in the 4th. Why would he, they were up by more than 30 points!!!!

This was a 'divisional battle'. Okay, I hope the Bears do a better job of being an opponent or this division is almost definately the Packers.....

Yeah, I gather I missed a laugher. Minnesota is really handicapped, of course, with Peterson out, as much of their offense revolved around him, and they can go only so far with Matt Asiata as the feature back. That coupled with no really competent quarterback, and you won't win many.

As for the division, don't forget about the Lions. They're currently sitting on top of the division and have looked pretty good so far. In the past, we'd expect some kind of meltdown, usually late in the season, in Detroit--with the volatile Jim Schwartz running the show--but now, with the calmer Jim Caldwell, this may change. What looked in the preseason like a two-way battle for the NFC-North now looks like a three-way struggle.

I took a look at the recap of last night's game, and here it is (with a post-game appearance by Vikings' coach, Mike Zimmer) for anyone interested:
